In Loving Memory of Mary Alice Buchanan

Mary Alice Buchanan, 79, of Long Branch, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at her home on August 10th.

Mary was a warm, intelligent, and funny woman whose kindness and generosity touched many lives. She was a dedicated school teacher who devoted her life to educating and inspiring others. Teaching was more than a career for Mary—it was her passion and calling. She had a natural ability to connect with her students, encourage them to believe in themselves, and make learning meaningful. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, and the lessons she shared will continue to live on in those she taught.

Mary was born in Port Jefferson, Long Island, to Alice and Arthur Johnson, and was raised in Sound Beach, New York. Growing up, she created lasting memories with her family and especially cherished time with her many cousins. Those childhood bonds remained an important and treasured part of her life.

Mary graduated The Cordtland State Teachers College of New York where she obtained her MBA and later attended the College of New Rochelle, where she earned her Masters in Education.

Mary dedicated 18 years of her teaching career to Hastings-on-Hudson and 25 years to Swimming River School, where she made a lasting impact on generations of students. Her commitment, patience, and love for teaching were evident in everything she did, and she was deeply respected and cherished by colleagues and students alike. During her many years in education, she also formed numerous close friendships with fellow teachers and staff, relationships she deeply valued and cherished throughout her life.

Mary was a longtime resident of Shrewsbury, New Jersey, where she lived for 36 years. Shrewsbury was home to Mary for much of her life, and she treasured the years she spent there. Eventually, she made a dream come true when she moved to Long Branch, a place she had always wanted to call home. She loved living on the water and found great happiness in the beauty and peacefulness of her surroundings.

Above all, Mary was a devoted mother to her son, Kevin Buchanan, whom she loved deeply. Kevin was the center of her world and a source of great pride and joy. Their bond was strong and enduring, and her love for him was unwavering.

Mary also loved travel and adventure. She treasured the trips she took with her sister, Veronica Parent, and brother-in-law, Richard Parent. These journeys created lasting memories that she carried with her and often reflected on with joy. The highlight of her travels was a trip to Tuscany, Italy, for the wedding of her son, Kevin, to his beautiful wife, Lindsay Rae Buonopane, of Rumson, New Jersey. It was a deeply meaningful and joyful occasion that she held especially close to her heart.

Family was central to Mary’s life, and she especially enjoyed time with her nieces, Allison and Krissy. She valued their laughter, closeness, and the special relationships they shared. The memories they created together will remain deeply meaningful.

Mary will be remembered for her intelligence, humor, compassion, and the way she made others feel valued and cared for. She had a gift for making people feel special, and her presence brought comfort and joy to many.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, education, and cherished memories. Her passing leaves a profound void, but her spirit will live on through her son, her family, her former students, and all who were fortunate to know her.

She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.

A gathering of family and friends will take place on Monday from 4-8 pm at John E. Day Funeral Home 85 Riverside Avenue Red Bank, New Jersey. Mass will be held on Tuesday at 11:00am at St. James R.C Church Red Bank, New Jersey. A private committal will follow .
